A national grocery retailer was replacing the checkout system behind every register in its stores, which handles $140B+ in sales a year. I was the PM for payments, leading 7 engineers and 3 QA testers.
- Problem Every way a shopper pays had to work on the new system, from cash and debit to government benefits, health plan cards, and fuel. Many come with their own rules. A WIC card, for example, can only pay for approved items, so the register has to know what each card covers and charge the rest to another payment.
- What I shipped Payments at the register and the gas pump, including three new payment types built from scratch: health plan benefit cards, WIC (a government nutrition program for families), and fuel payments at the pump, kiosk, and with company fleet cards.
- Impact Health plan cards went live in under 3 months for 4M+ cardholders, with no disruption to their benefits. We earned WIC certification in Kansas, so about 49,000 people a month can now use WIC at 63 stores. Fuel payments were built and tested for 1,700+ fuel centers.
